Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has underscored the importance of prioritizing the boy child in society, emphasizing the need to raise responsible and empowered young men.
Speaking at the Sonnex rPET Recycling Plant in Ikorodu during the 2025 Boy Child Initiative, organized in collaboration with Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Ltd, she participated in an empowerment program that benefited 200 boys, focusing on mentorship, life skills, and community development.
Hakan Turkmen, General Manager of rPET, highlighted the significance of equipping boys with sustainable practices, aligning with this year’s theme, ‘Advancing Circular Economy and Recycling.’ He stressed that sustainability plays a crucial role in economic development.
“As a company committed to sustainable development and community impact, Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Ltd actively supports initiatives that equip young boys with education, vocational skills, and opportunities for growth. We believe in nurturing future leaders by fostering an environment that encourages responsibility, confidence, and meaningful contributions to society,” he said.
Sonnex rPET Recycling Plant, a leading force in West Africa’s plastic recycling sector, is dedicated to tackling the region’s escalating plastic waste challenge. Its state-of-the-art facility converts PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) waste into high-quality food-grade recycled products, such as rPET flakes and bottle-to-bottle pellets, contributing to a sustainable circular economy.
During the visit, the First Lady and the boys engaged with the Sonnex team, gaining firsthand knowledge of the recycling process and how PET plastics are transformed into food-grade resin.
“This experience reinforced the importance of sustainable practices and the opportunities available within the recycling industry. We remain committed to driving positive change through recycling, job creation, and mentorship—ensuring that young boys in our community have the tools and opportunities to build a brighter future,” Turkmen added.
