Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has praised the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) for its dedication to improving the lives of women in the state.

Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, the governor highlighted the state government’s commitment to empowering women through various initiatives.

He emphasized how investments in the 19 tuition-free skills acquisition centres and the Women Development Centre are helping women become more self-sufficient, assume leadership roles, and actively participate in the economy.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that these efforts align with global priorities, recognizing women as key drivers of economic growth, innovation, and societal transformation. He assured that his administration remains committed to creating an inclusive environment where women can thrive in their chosen fields.

He also reiterated the state’s dedication to protecting women from gender-based violence while ensuring they have opportunities to take on leadership roles in governance, decision-making, and entrepreneurship. “These policies will enable female entrepreneurs to grow and sustain their businesses,” he added.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, reinforced the ministry’s unwavering commitment to empowering women and girls through various training initiatives.

She highlighted women's vital role in families and communities, noting their strides in breaking barriers and driving national development. However, challenges like gender inequality, economic disparity, gender-based violence, and limited access to education, healthcare, and leadership persist.

Calling for urgent action, Mrs. Dada stressed the need for greater commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of women in Lagos and across the country.

“As a ministry, we have been unwavering in our commitment to support women through empowerment programmes, training initiatives, and advocacy,” she said.

She further explained that the ministry has created platforms to equip women with the skills and resources necessary for financial independence and self-sufficiency.

“The challenges women face, whether at home, in the workplace, or in society, can take a significant toll on their mental and emotional well-being.

“We must move beyond promises to practical solutions that will empower women and uplift the vulnerable,” she emphasized.
