As the incidents of rape continue to increase in recent times, the Lagos State Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Kazeem Alogba, has challenged the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Lagos State Branch, to look beyond the instrumentality of the law in addressing the increasing cases of rape across the country.
The Chief Judge, who gave the charge while welcoming members of FIDA on a courtesy visit to his office at Ikeja, on Thursday, opined that there is a need to also address some other societal vices that make rape appear normal and morally justifiable.
He said, "I want this Association to look beyond the legal aspect and see if we can check on the society itself because I feel that society has become less godly, which is why we are having increased rate in cases of father raping daughters among others".
While promising that the State Judiciary will provide every legal and institutional support that will help nip all rape-related cases in the bud, Justice Alogba commended the Association for taking it upon itself to champion the fight against rape and helping victims at no cost.
The Chief Judge assured the FIDA team of appointing competent and dedicated Judges to the Sexual Offences Court, just as he enjoined the Association to work with other agencies and NGOs on initiating modalities to reduce the high cases of rape in society.
The Chairperson of FIDA (Lagos State Branch), Mrs. Philomena Nneji thanked the Chief Judge for the willingness to support the efforts of the Association and for granting them the opportunity of the courtesy visit.
