The Lagos State Sports Commission, in conjunction with Sports Global Ambassadors, has organised an all-track event for school students to commemorate the Y2022 International Day of Sports for Development and Peace.
The event, which was held at the Indoor Sports Hall, Molade Okoya-Thomas building and Mainbowl of Teslim Balogun Stadium, featured private and public sector students across the six Education Districts in the State participating in track events namely: 100m, 200m, 4×100 relays and mixed relays for boys and girls.
In his keynote address, the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Oluwatoyin Gafaar, said the event was an opportunity to gather youths and teach them how to employ the instrument of sports in resolving conflict that exists all over the world.
His words: “It is an opportunity for us to empower our youths to know what is right from this age and to understand that it is not about violence, rather it is about discussion, engagement and resolving conflict without resorting to violence. Sport is a very good tool for resolving conflict”.
Gafaar said no matter what people do and no matter the situation, people have to come to the round table to engage in meaningful discussion in resolving their differences.
Director of School Sports in the Commission, Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, said sports is the only platform that can bring unity, peace and tranquility to a nation, stating further that the event, being the first competitive programme to be organised for both public and private schools, has been interesting and impressive.
