Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, in partnership with West African Vocational Education (WAVE) Academy, has commenced the concluding part of a training programme for 250 unemployed youths on employability skills which began on March 9, 2020, but had to be postponed midway due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in Lagos State.
The Honourable Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, in her address during the concluding session of the 20-day training for unemployed youths, said the programme will further help to bridge the job scarcity gap among the teeming population in the State.
Arobieke stated that the partnership between the Ministry and WAVE Academy was aimed at empowering and enhancing the employability skills of the beneficiaries in the areas of Teamwork, Time Management and Good Communication skills.
The Commissioner explained that “WAVE Academy is a vocational training platform designed to empower and equip millions of disadvantaged West African youths with employability skills, alter their mindsets through the provision of necessary skills required to take advantage of the employment opportunities and enhance their social mobility”.
She said further that “WAVE Academy tackles the large unemployment gap among youths by identifying determined and underserved West African youths, empowering them with training and mentorship on crucial employability skills and connecting them to available job opportunities”.
Mrs. Arobieke maintained that the skills are indispensable in securing lucrative employment opportunities in both the formal and informal sectors of the economy, envisaging that the training would increase the chances of the participants being employed in their various areas of speciality.
She asserted that the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment has, since its establishment, been living up to its mandate and assigned responsibilities by addressing the unemployment crisis in Lagos State.
The Commissioner thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support to unemployed youths in the State through the provision of job opportunities and an enabling environment for capacity building.
While noting that the Ministry is poised to actualise its mandate, Arobieke assured Lagosians that the Ministry will at all times continue with its capacity building programmes for the benefit of Lagos residents.
