Lagos State Government has said that there is a need for a change of approach to employment opportunities among job seekers in order to meet the present-day demands in the Labour market.
Citing the instance of the COVID-19 pandemic which has changed the nature of jobs globally, the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke said that it is imperative for young graduates to harness the opportunity of the present pandemic to re-think and re-strategise on how to cope with jobs in the future.
The Commissioner disclosed this while addressing participants at an online mindset re-orientation workshop organised by the Ministry with the theme "Surviving the Times, the Future of the Job, the New Normal for Unemployed Graduates in the State”.
Arobieke stated that producing employable graduates with relevant employability skills are important because the labour market is intensely competitive and employers are looking for people who are flexible to initiatives and have the ability to undertake different tasks simultaneously with little or no supervision.
She said the Ministry partnered with recruitment Agencies to further prepare young graduates for employment opportunities by enhancing their job interview skills and impact job hunting strategies which will give them an edge over their contemporaries.
She informed the participants that possessing academic certificates are no longer enough to gain formal job employment without having relevant skills that will make job seekers assets and not liabilities to their employer.
“The current model of education, career planning and job searching need a face-lift considering the dynamism in the global labour market, graduates need to rise and learn new rules of success, this requires being proactive and strategic in thinking", Commissioner added.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas expressed confidence in the capacities of the Resource Persons to impact the participants from their wealth of experiences, urging the graduates to utilise the information that would be acquired from the training to chart a new course for their career.
She informed the participants about the Graduate Internship Programme the Ministry is coming up with, just as she advised unemployed and underemployed graduates in the State to visit the five Job Registration Centres under the supervision of the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment for the documentation of their details so that they can benefit from subsequent initiatives by the State Government.
