The Lagos State Government has commended commuters for the support and understanding displayed towards ensuring the free-flow of traffic through the observation of traffic guidelines issued on the partial closure and use of alternative routes since the closure of the 3rd Mainland Bridge.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye gave the commendation while commenting on the State of alternative routes saying, “It is heart-warming to note that despite the partial closure and the commencement of repair works on a section of the 3rd Mainland Bridge, the traffic has been fair and smooth, this could be attributed to the support and understanding commuters have displayed through the observation of traffic guidelines and the use of alternative routes which are in top condition”.
Adeyoye gave an assurance that the synergy and collaboration between officials of Federal and State agencies – the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Nigeria Police as well as other relevant government agencies will be sustained during the period of closure.
“Aside deploying an effective traffic management strategy and ensuring the alternatives are maintained, I must also commend commuters for the support and understanding they have displayed through the observation of traffic guidelines on the partial closure and the use of alternative routes”, the Special Adviser said.
She maintained that due to the strategic importance of the 3rd Mainland Bridge to commuters in Lagos, the partial closure of the bridge had to be undertaken by the Federal Government, in partnership with Lagos State, to avert structural damage to sections of the bridge, disclosing that the closure is expected to last for six months until Sunday, January 24, 2021.
Reviewing activities of motorists who plied the bridge today, Adeyoye expressed satisfaction that contrary to fears expressed before the closure, the travel experience of commuters has been smooth and devoid of chaos.
She explained that as part of efforts to ease the travel experience of commuters throughout the duration of the repair works, the Bridge maintenance works are divided into two phases: the partial traffic diversion would be enforced on the Lagos Island-bound section of the road from Oworoshoki Inward Lagos from 12 midnight to 1pm, while from 1pm to 12 midnight daily, motorists will have access to travel from Lagos Island inward Oworoshoki.
According to the Special Adviser, as part of efforts to manage the possible fallouts of the partial closure, the government has put in place a methodological traffic management plan to avert gridlocks, and is also committed to ensuring that identified alternate routes are continuously rehabilitated throughout the duration of the project.
She, promised that the government will continue to engage the public by providing regular updates on the project as well as traffic information to acquaint motorists with the situation on all routes along the Third Mainland Bridge axis.
While assuring the motoring public that the traffic situation will be properly managed, Adeyoye urged motorists to remain confident that the decision to fix the third mainland bridge was taken to avert an imminent danger as well as ensure the safety of lives of users of the ever-busy highway.
