Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Americas (NIDOA), USA has settled plans to share palliatives to vulnerable persons in Lagos as part of its bid to ease sufferings due to the coronavirus pandemic. The organisation’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Yinka Tella in a press release issued on Saturday, the 16th of May, said the distribution exercise would be held on Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22, with Ajegunle, Mile 12, and Ayobo/Ipaja communities benefitting. Dr. Tella said food packages consisting of Rice, Beans, Garri, Power Oil, and Maggi, as well as reusable masks, would be given to beneficiaries. The NIDO spokesman added that the exercise, which is part of NIDO’s WECARE COVID-19 palliatives initiative, is being conducted in partnership with the Organisation of Women in International Trade (OWIT), Nigeria Chapter, and community leaders in the target areas. In the statement, NIDO Americas USA chairman, Ms. Patience Ndidi Key, said the organisation was moved to assist some of those whose means of livelihood had been affected by shelter-in-place orders. While emphasising on the importance of strategic partnerships between NIDO Americas USA and trusted organisations like OWIT to execute projects in Nigeria, Ms. Key revealed that “ a feed Nigeria Fund would soon be launched to tackle hunger on a sustainable basis”. The President, OWIT Nigeria, Ms. Blessing Irabor, expressed delight at the initiative. ”I want to appreciate NIDO Americas USA for considering our organisation a worthy local partner to execute this project. I pray God Almighty strengthens them and replenishes the sources where this money came from,” she said. Speaking through the head of Economic, Trade and Investment at the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC USA, Mr. Yakubu Suleiman, the Ambassador of Nigeria to the United States, Ambassador Sylvanus Nsofor lauded NIDO Americas USA for its admirable tradition of excellence and service. According to the statement, NIDO has also been receiving commendations from other quarters over its activities. Among these commendations were those received from Nigeria’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Samson Itegboje who lauded NIDO for its “patriotism and love for genuine love for humanity towards Nigeria and its people” and the Nigerian Consul General in New York, Mr. Ben Okoyen who applauded NIDO Americas USA’s act of “selflessly reaching out to the poor in our society.” NIDO Americas, USA was founded in 2000 and recognized by the Federal Government of Nigeria as the umbrella organisation for Nigerians in the Diaspora with foreign missions supporting its development. The organisation serves as a platform for intellectuals, technocrats, policy makers, workers and Nigerians in Diaspora to present development propositions to the Government at all levels.
